2010 Habitat Assistance:

DubuqueLand Pheasants Forever would like to thank all participants that have been performing the proper preparation and care of their projects. The last few winters have been difficult for the pheasant. Studies have shown a direct relationship between winter mortality and total days of snow cover. Food plots can really help during the extended cold spells and periods of snow cover but pheasants rarely die of starvation. Exposure and predation are the leading causes of death. Planting food plots at least 100 yards away from tall trees and close to good dense cover is a key factor in helping pheasants avoid predation. Sorghum is a great alternative for keeping input cost down and will reduced the pressure food plots receive from deer while providing great winter food and cover.

Please complete an application to apply for a food plot, permanent seeding or shelterbelt. If you are planning to perform more than one project an application must be applied for each individually. The deadline for the applications for Habitat projects will be April 1st of each growing season. To qualify for the program you will have to fill out the application form and include the location of the project for inspection purposes, which must be located in Dubuque County. Food plots may be funded up to 4 acres at $25 an acre per farm/owner, which includes all properties even if they aren't continuous. Permanent seedings may be funded up to a maximum of $200.00 per project with a minimum of a 5-acre project. Shelterbelts may be funded up to $400 per project but not to exceed the cost of the project. Distributed amounts will be determined by the number of applications received.

Pheasant Forever has teamed up with Native grass and Forb seed dealers from Iowa to form a Habitat Check Off Certificate. Purchasing seed through any local Pheasant Forever Chapter will earn your local chapter a percentage of each sale for upland habitat development and enhancement. If there are any questions regarding habitat projects such as food plots, windbreaks, or CRP planting and maintenance feel free to contact the Pheasant Forever representative, Dave Reuter at (563) 590-1908.
